Nike has dropped some new styles of their excellent Nike Metcon 5 this month.
Here’s “Black/White/Gunsmoke/Black”.
The outsole of the Metcon 5 is flat – for stability in lifting weights. It’s really an indoor gym shoe so there is not a lot of deep tread like you would find on an outdoor running shoe.
The Nike Metcon 5 has a 3d printed haptic upper – which is both tough and breathable at the same time.
The "rope wrap" is back on this version of the Metcon. It’s huge – but that’s OK because it looks good.
From the top you can see the overall layout of these shoes. We should note, they are a bit narrow. You may want to go 1/2 size up from your normal size for width.
The laces have "FlyWire" integrated – this helps to really lock the fit in on your foot. Think of it as a light-weight mid-foot strap – almost like that on a weightlifting shoe.
The heel has some handy stats printed on it. One of the things it calls out is the 4mm heel to toe drop (or profile) as listed on the shoe.
Hyperlifts give you an additional 8mm (Mens) of heel to toe drop. This makes it easier to "get low " on squatting movements.

There’s two different uppers available – one that is knit and one that is “Grit” – meaning a tougher upper. We’re going to laser-focus in on the Grit version of the shoe in this review. The Nike Free X Metcon 2 is a great cross training shoe – that works well for running too. It’s part of Nike’s “Free” line – and that means that it is meant to replicate the barefoot running experience. Let’s take a look at how it does that – while we show you the new styles. Like the Texas Longhorns? Then “Black/Iron Grey/White/Desert Orange” is your style. Here’s the removable insole – you can see the Texas longhorns steer. It looks pretty good – but few people will see that – as it is inside the shoe. Fan of the NFL? Here’s the Pittsburgh Steelers version of the Free x Metcon 2. The yellow and black are a unique look for this shoe. Here’s the “top down” view. We also have the Georgia Bulldogs. Bad news for Ohio State fans – that colorway sold out within days – so these are no longer available. That’s a hint too that these are all limited runs – if you like them – get them now. Fans of Tom Brady and crew will [Read more …]
